Messages as a chat

Messages

Messages gets a space of its own: an inbox, a list of conversations and chat bubbles, with search, reactions and unread markers. It works in the deck, with the keyboard and on mobile.

A conversation in Messages shown as chat bubbles: Carol asks about the book club on Thursday, and the reply on the right says count me in.

RSS feeds in your timelines

Posts and timelines

You can follow RSS feeds and read them as a timeline, with feed discovery, unread markers, feed images and widgets, and their items can show in Home. Subscriptions import and export as OPML, and admins can set default feeds.

The Mastodon Blog RSS feed read as a timeline: the feed card with its address, then its latest articles with their picture, summary, a Post button and a bookmark.

The Accounts timeline

Posts and timelines

A timeline in split panes, with the accounts that posted recently on one side and their latest posts on the other, which loads new posts as they come. It can be filtered and used with the keyboard, and you can hide chosen accounts from Home.

The options of the Streams timeline, which grew out of the Accounts timeline: accounts you follow, your mutual followers or your followers, and switches for hashtags, forums, RSS feeds, lists, custom feeds, replies and reposts.

A richer search

Search

Search gets filters, a query syntax and a redesigned interface, and looking something up by its address works better.

The search page with its Posts, Users, Forums and Hashtags tabs, the query from:bob lake typed in the field, and the matching post by Bob about a morning walk by the lake.

Bookmark improvements

Posts and timelines

Bookmarks now live at addresses named after them, and get more interface and defaults of their own.

The Bookmarks page with its Posts, Watching, RSS and Users tabs, and a row of bookmark categories such as Fediverse, Funny, Inspiration and Later with their counts.

Uploading HEIC and HEIF pictures

Media and emoji

Pictures in HEIC or HEIF can be uploaded. When you upload without compression the original HEIC file is kept, and you are warned that not everything can display it.

The dialog shown when a HEIC picture is uploaded without compression, offering to convert it to JPEG, keep the original HEIC file with a warning that not everything can display it, or keep both.

Better ways to view media

Media and emoji

Media gets a floating video player, albums shown as a carousel, crop presets, media information and a Media tab in Explore. Lightboxes and attachment thumbnails were improved too.

The media lightbox over a post with three pictures: the counter 1 / 3, ALT, more and close buttons, arrows to the previous and next picture, and the size, weight and format of the file in the corner.
